Yoga Retreat in Japan, May 30-June 6
with Marla Apt and Paul Cabanis
Join Marla and Paul on the first international yoga retreat to be held at this national treasure of Japan. Our yoga room will be in a lovingly converted Buddhist temple located on a UNESCO World Heritage site in Nikko, Japan.
Nikko means “rising sun” and we will be doing yoga in Myogetsu-bo, meaning “enchanted moon.” This symbolically represents the inclusion of the reflective power of the moon within the radiance of the sun as expressed in the esoteric meaning of the term Hatha Yoga.
Between morning and afternoon asana and pranayama classes, your afternoons can be spent soaking in an onsen (thermal hot springs) located in the hotel, exploring the shops and cafes of downtown Nikko, walking the many nature trails, visiting shrines and temples. Our hosts, EcoNikko have arranged for unique opportunities for our group to explore the best of Nikko offered at a nominal cost as well as an optional daily bento box lunch (for approximately $5 per day).
An hour and a half (train ride) from Tokyo, Nikko is famous for Japan's most lavishly decorated shrine complex and mausoleum of the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate.
Nikko has been a center of Shinto and Buddhist mountain worship for many centuries, and Nikko National Park offers scenic, mountainous landscapes, lakes, waterfalls, hot springs, wild monkeys and hiking trails.
The entire hill in Nikko where the yoga hall, ancient temples and shrines are located is a highly traditional, pristine, and protected site. As non-traditional methods of construction are prohibited, only manual techniques were used (no machines) on the recent restoration of the temple and asana room.
Don’t miss this extraordinary opportunity to study and practice yoga, immerse yourself in a fascinating cultural experience as well as enjoy the season of blossoms in the beautiful nature of Nikko.
